The Jews, Quraish, and Ghatafan united to raid Medina. The Messenger of Allah, Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, consulted his Companions, and Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, suggested digging the trench. Medina was surrounded from the east and west by two lava fields (harrahs), and from the south by buildings, lava fields, and orchards. The only access for the confederates was from the northern side. The trench was dug from the north, from the eastern lava field to the edge of the western lava field. The digging was distributed among the Mujahideen, and they completed it in a short period. The length of the trench is estimated at five thousand cubits, its depth no less than seven cubits, and its width no less than nine cubits.
