Is it permissible to play chess in the mosque for the purpose of gathering young people and connecting them to it?

Scholars differed on the ruling regarding playing chess. Many of them went to the opinion of its prohibition, by analogy with dice. Some jurists, however, see its permissibility if it is without compensation, due to the absence of a text prohibiting it. Among those who ruled its prohibition are Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Malik, and Abu Hanifa. Al-Shafi'i, on the other hand, went to the opinion of its permissibility. For someone who repeatedly plays chess, his testimony is not accepted according to Malik and Abu Hanifa. Based on this, playing chess is not permissible in the mosque, and young people can be engaged through scientific, cultural, and permissible sports activities.
