Dryness is one of the signs of purity (tahara). It is ascertained by inserting a piece of cloth, cotton, or a white sanitary pad into the outer part of the vagina, which is what becomes apparent when a woman squats for her needs, and then removing it immediately. If it comes out clean, free of blood, yellowish discharge (sufra), or brownish discharge (kudra), then the woman has achieved purity and is obligated to perform ghusl (ritual bath). Women's customs vary in discerning purity between the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda) and dryness.
