What is the ruling of the religion concerning a mother who abuses her daughter by hitting, cursing, and invoking death upon her? Will the mother’s supplications be answered in this case? And what are the duties and rights of the daughter towards her mother who harms her?

Allah Almighty has enjoined dutifulness to parents, associating obedience to them with His worship and the prohibition of associating partners with Him. Allah specifically mentioned the mother due to her greater right over the father. Dutifulness to them includes kindness and gentleness, not raising one's voice, nor showing annoyance. Dutifulness to parents is not exclusive to them being Muslim; rather, it is obligatory to be dutiful to them even if they are disbelievers. Dutifulness to parents is an expiation for major sins. One must be patient with what emanates from the mother, for being dutiful to her and treating her well earns her رضا (contentment/pleasure). If the mother's supplication (du'a) is without right, it is not accepted and is impermissible, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The supplication of one of you is answered as long as he does not pray for a sin or the cutting off of ties of kinship."
