What is the ruling on one who sells his religion for his worldly gain?

He who sells his religion for his worldly life experiences three states: The first is wasting days in life's pleasures and becoming preoccupied with them instead of preparing for the Day of Return, and he is deluded, for Allah Almighty says: "And this worldly life is nothing but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [true] life, if only they knew." The second is plunging into disobedience to Allah short of disbelief, and his matter is left to Allah's will if he does not repent. The third is falling into apostasy, and such a person will abide eternally in Hell.
