Tarawih prayer is a established by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. It does not differ from al-Layl (night prayer) in meaning. Any supererogatory prayer performed after Isha until Fajr is called Qiyam al-Layl. It has become customary to call Qiyam al-Layl in "Tarawih," and congregational prayer is legislated for it. As for singling out Qiyam al-Layl in Ramadan and abandoning it thereafter, this is not an act of worship to other than Allah. Qiyam al-Layl is generally encouraged, and especially so in Ramadan.
