Shortening prayers for a traveler from Cairo to Alexandria and vice-versa is permissible, whether traveling by train or car. The distances separating these cities are vast, and it is not a condition to pass orchards for the concessions of travel to begin. Shortening prayers begins after passing the inhabited area of one's town and continues until returning to it, unless the traveler intends to stay in the other town for four days.
