Is the Hadith: "Verily, each of you is constituted in his mother's womb..." absolute, or is it qualified by the Hadith: "He performs the deeds of the people of Paradise in what appears to people..."? And how can they be reconciled? Is the application of this principle correct here?

The Hadith indicates that a man may perform actions that outwardly appear to be those of the people of Paradise, yet he is from the people of Hell, and he may perform actions that outwardly appear to be those of the people of Hell, yet he is from the people of Paradise. The reason for this is that a man showed excellent performance in Jihad, and the Companions praised him. Thereupon, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is from the people of Hell." So, the man killed himself, which confirmed the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. His statement: "as it appears to the people" means that the inner reality may differ from the outward appearance, and that a bad ending is due to an inner matter hidden from people. Allah Almighty knows both the outward and the inner states, and a servant is held accountable for what is in his inner and outer being, whereas people are held accountable only for what is apparent.
