What is the difference between major shirk and minor shirk in terms of reality and ruling, and what are the detailed categories of each?

Linguistically, shirk (polytheism/associating partners with Allah) means taking a partner. Religiously, it means taking a partner or an equal with Allah in His Lordship, worship, or Names and Attributes. It is divided into major shirk (al-shirk al-akbar) and minor shirk (al-shirk al-asghar).

Firstly: Major Shirk (al-Shirk al-Akbar) This is dedicating what is rightfully Allah’s to other than Him, whether in His Lordship, Divinity, or Names and Attributes. It can be overt, like idol worship, or subtle, like the shirk of hypocrites. It includes shirk of belief (such as believing in the existence of another creator or disposer alongside Allah, or loving someone other than Allah as one loves Him), shirk of words (such as supplicating to other than Allah for what only Allah can do), and shirk of actions (such as sacrificing or prostrating to other than Allah, or legislating laws that rival Allah's judgment). This type of shirk expels one from the religion and necessitates eternal residence in Hellfire.

Secondly: Minor Shirk (al-Shirk al-Asghar) This is anything that serves as a means to major shirk, or is mentioned in the texts as shirk but does not reach the level of major shirk. It involves relying on means not sanctioned by Allah (like amulets), or glorifying things in a way that does not reach the status of Lordship (like swearing by other than Allah or saying "what Allah willed and what you willed"). It can be overt, like wearing talismans, or subtle, like showing off (ar-riyaa'), or in beliefs (such as believing that something is a cause for benefit or repelling harm without legal or natural evidence), or in words (like saying "we were given rain by such-and-such a star" without believing in the stars' independence), or in actions (like seeking blessings from something Allah has not made blessed).

Guidelines for distinguishing between them: 1. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explicitly stated that it is minor shirk (like showing off). 2. The word shirk is mentioned in an indefinite form in the texts (not accompanied by "al-", the definite article). 3. The Companions understood that the intention was minor shirk. 4. The Prophet's (peace be upon him) explanation of shirk or kufr (disbelief) indicates that it is minor.

Difference in ruling: Major shirk expels one from Islam and necessitates kufr (disbelief), whereas minor shirk does not expel one from Islam but is a major sin. One must be cautious of shirk of both types, as it is the greatest of sins that Allah does not forgive, and its perpetrator is deprived of Paradise if it is major shirk.
