How can one advise family members to stop backbiting (gheebah) and tale-telling (nameemah) in their gatherings without causing a greater evil?

It is recommended to direct these gatherings towards beneficial matters, such as reading purposeful books like "Riyadh as-Salihin" (Gardens of the Righteous), and taking turns delivering short talks. There is no harm in some permissible activities like riddles and humor. If the conversation drifts into backbiting (ghibah (definition)), it is advisable to gently warn them or try to change the subject. If they persist in backbiting, one must leave the gathering; for Allah Almighty says: "And He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in another conversation. Indeed, in that case, you would be like them." (An-Nisa: 140).
