What is the ruling on listening to a person who talks excessively about people, whether in Ramadan or at other times?

Allah has legislated fasting for the attainment of piety. Fasting is not complete merely by abstaining from food and drink; rather, it includes abstaining from lying, falsehood, and idle talk. Backbiting diminishes the reward of fasting, and some scholars have even gone as far as to say that it invalidates it. It is among the major sins, and one must condemn its perpetrator by hand or by tongue. If unable to do so, then by heart, while leaving the gathering.
