How does a Muslim become one of the pious and one who sheds many tears upon hearing the Quran and about the tragedies of Muslims, and how does one become frequent in contemplation of Allah's blessings, and what is contemplation?
Piety (Taqwa) is an exalted status that saves a servant from punishment and by which he attains high ranks. It eases his affairs, relieves his worries, and God provides for him from sources he never anticipated. It is obedience to God by fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions; the more obedience increases, the more piety increases.
The softening of the heart and its awe are achieved through several matters:
1. Reciting the Quran with contemplation, reflection, and admonition, for this is the purpose of its revelation.
2. Frequently remembering God with the heart and tongue, for by it hearts are reassured and filled with awe.
3. Reflecting on God's cosmic signs, such as the creation of the heavens and the earth and what is in them, and contemplating His countless blessings.
4. Frequent supplication, for God is near, answers those who call upon Him, and removes evil.
