Zakat (definition) is not obligatory on a plot of land except under two conditions: that it is owned by your father through a compensatory contract, and that he intended it for sale and profit at the time of acquiring it. If one of these conditions is not met, then zakat becomes obligatory on its price if it is sold and a hawl (lunar year) has passed on it. Some scholars are of the view that a mere intention makes it a trade asset. In this case, if your father intended to sell the land, a hawl (lunar year) is calculated, and he pays zakat on the land's value at a rate of a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
