What is the ruling on fasting the Day of Arafah?

Fasting the day of Arafah is a confirmed Sunnah for non-pilgrims. It was reported from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, that it expiates the sins of the past and coming year. As for the pilgrim, it is recommended for him to break his fast to strengthen himself for supplication and standing at Arafah. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, broke his fast on the day of Arafah during his pilgrimage.
