"Sunnah," "Nafl," and "Tatwwo'" are synonymous terms in the terminology of the earlyصوليين (Islamic jurists specializing in legal theory). They are used to refer to acts of worship legislated in addition to the obligatory (Fara'id). There is another view held by some later scholars who differentiate between them: Sunnah is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did, made apparent, and consistently observed, and for which there is evidence of its non-obligatory nature. Nafl is what is in addition to the Sunnah and the Fard (obligatory). Tatwwo' is what a servant does voluntarily, for which there is no specific textual evidence. The disagreement between these terms is semantic; all of them refer to what is legislated in addition to the obligatory duties, but they differ in rank and preferability.
