Must the debtor repay the loan in Saudi Riyals, which he received, or in Egyptian Pounds, according to the exchange rate at the time of receiving the loan?
Whoever borrows a currency must repay it with the same currency, without calculating its value at the time of borrowing. It is not permissible to stipulate repayment in a currency different from the one received. However, paying the difference in value between the two currencies with the consent of both parties, without compulsion, is permissible. The Islamic Fiqh Academy and a number of scholars, such as Ibn Baz and Ibn Uthaymeen, have affirmed that the basis for repaying fixed debts is with the like, not the value, and that it is not permissible for the lender to take an increase except with the borrower's forbearance. Violating this ruling and taking the difference unjustly is considered devouring people's property by false means.
