Zakat differs from taxes in several ways: Zakat is an obligation from Allah upon Muslims, disbursed to specific beneficiaries (the eight categories) at a fixed rate and with specific conditions. Whereas, taxes are imposed by the state in exchange for its services, paid to the state, and their amount and conditions are determined by the state according to what it deems beneficial.
