What is the ruling on dealing with a sick brother who is said to be bewitched or possessed by a jinn, and who defiles the Book of Allah by drawing and scribbling in it, and does not pray, knowing that he is married and has children?

Tampering with the Mushaf (copy of the Qur’an) and drawing pictures on it, if done by a sane person with the intent of mockery, is disbelief (kufr) that expels its perpetrator from Islam. However, if it originates from someone who is not of sound mind, then the pen is lifted from him (he is not held accountable), and his family must prevent him from handling the Mushaf. Anyone who enables him to do so commits a sin. As for abandoning prayer entirely by a sane, deliberate person, it is disbelief according to the preponderant opinion. However, someone who is not of sound mind is not obligated by it. It is recommended to treat the brother if he is enchanted (bewitched) or mentally ill and to prevent him from tampering with the Qur’an.
