In prayer, does prostration [of prayer] suffice for prostration of recitation if the worshipper recites a surah containing a prostration of recitation, or is prostration of recitation obligatory upon him after the prayer?
Prostration of recitation (Sujud al-Tilawah) is a Sunnah according to the majority of jurists, both inside and outside of prayer. Whoever prostrates, it is good and blessed, and whoever omits it, there is no sin upon him. Thus, if one recites a verse of prostration during prayer, it is sunnah for him to prostrate immediately, then rise to complete his prayer. The prostration of prayer (Sujud al-Salat) does not suffice for it, according to the majority. The Hanafis, however, are of the view that bowing (Ruku') or the prostration of prayer (Sujud al-Salat) can suffice for the prostration of recitation, provided it is done immediately and one intends it during the bowing. The most preponderant opinion is that of the majority, due to the indications of sound hadiths supporting it.
