Is it permissible to repeat verses during the night vigil (qiyam al-layl) to attain the reward mentioned in the hadith: "Whoever prays with ten verses will not be recorded among the heedless; whoever prays with one hundred verses will be recorded among the devout; and whoever prays with one thousand verses will be recorded among the muqanṭirīn (those given a great reward)," especially if this is done with the intention of memorizing the Qur'an?

Repeating verses for memorization is based on whether the noble prophetic hadith: "(He who) has not been recorded among the negligent" is specific to prayer or general. The preponderant view is that it is specific to prayer, as there are narrations that confirm this. If that is the case, then the mentioned reward is not obtained by repeating verses outside of prayer. However, if it is general, there is no text that specifies that the reward is obtained through repetition. Nevertheless, it is not unlikely to attain it due to Allah's grace and abundant giving, especially since repeating verses in prayer is a Sunnah reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Companions.
