What is the ruling on food being present in the throat while fasting?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a fasting person finds food or drink in their throat, their fast is not broken by it unless they move it to a place from which they can expel it. If they are able to expel it, but then intentionally swallow it, their fast is broken by that. According to the Shafi'is, if food or drink reaches the limit of the dhahir (the apparent, i.e., the exit point of the letters kha and ha), intentionally swallowing it breaks the fast. However, if it remains within the limit of the batin (the internal, i.e., the exit point of the letters hamza and ha), its return to the stomach does not break the fast.
