What is the ruling on one who died by electrocution from a wire he placed around his garden to deter thieves and animals?

Your brother, who died due to an electrified wire in his garden, is considered to have accidentally killed himself. Scholars have differed on this matter: Is expiation obligatory from his wealth, or not? And is blood money obligatory for his heirs, or not?

The preponderant opinion is that one who accidentally kills himself is not subject to blood money for his death, nor is expiation obligatory from his wealth. The jurists based this on the Hadith of 'Amir ibn Al-Akwa', who accidentally struck himself with his sword and died. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not rule regarding him with blood money or anything else. This indicates that it is not obligatory.

Therefore, none of the deceased's relatives owe anything in terms of blood money or expiation. It is recommended for you to supplicate for him abundantly.
