Is it obligatory to go to the one whom you have backbitten to seek their forgiveness, or is it sufficient to give charity on their behalf or to mention them positively in the same gathering in which you backbit them?

It is obligatory to repent to Allah for backbiting, as it is one of the greatest sins, along with seeking absolution and forgiveness from the wronged person if possible and if it does not lead to a greater harm. If it does lead to a greater harm, then forgiveness should be sought from him with a general statement without specifying the backbiting, and it is not obligatory to give charity on his behalf. Some scholars are of the opinion that one should mention him positively in the gatherings where he was backbited and seek Allah's forgiveness for him.
