Was John, peace be upon him, killed, or was he raised to heaven as is the case with Jesus, peace be upon him, based on the narrations that speak of his life in heaven, according to the Hadith of Isra and Mi'raj?

Scholars have differed concerning the deaths of Zachariah and John (peace be upon them): whether they were killed or died naturally. Although the Quran mentions the Children of Israel killing prophets unjustly, and exegetes cite Zachariah and John as examples, there is no definitive text confirming their slaying. Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari mentioned narrations regarding their deaths, some of which are weak and some are from Isra'iliyyat (Jewish traditions). There is no scholarly opinion stating that John was raised to the heavens like Jesus (peace be upon him), and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) encounter with John during the Isra' (Night Journey) does not indicate his ascension, as the Prophet met other prophets who were not raised.
