How can I rid myself of a recurring sin that I cannot abandon, and does it entail that my deeds will become scattered dust?

To help in abandoning sin:

1. Recognizing the ugliness and ill-effects of sins, and that they are the cause of all evil and maladies in this world and the Hereafter, as Ibn al-Qayyim elucidated in "Al-Dā’ wal-Dawā’" (The Disease and the Cure).

2. Being mindful of Allah's full awareness and encompassing knowledge of His servant, and fearing His wrath and punishment.

3. Striving against the self with sincerity, for whoever strives will be guided to Allah's ways.

4. Supplicating and praying with sincerity and confidence that success is in Allah's hands.

5. Avoiding the causes of sin, abandoning bad company, associating with righteous people, adhering to gatherings of remembrance and knowledge, and not despairing of sincere repentance, no matter how often the sin is repeated.
