Should the bride's dowry be determined by her peers from her family or by her peers from the groom's family?

The majority of scholars hold that there is no minimum limit for the mahr (dowry), and if the spouses agree on a mahr that includes even a small benefit, that is sufficient.

Regarding the determination of mahr al-mithl (the dowry of her peers), some scholars refer to the mahr of the wife's female relatives from her 'asabah (agnatic relatives), such as sisters and paternal cousins. Others say it is the mahr of the women of her tribe generally. Still others believe it is determined based on her equivalent in terms of religiosity, beauty, wealth, and lineage, even if she is not from her relatives. As for determining mahr al-mithl by the amount of the brother's wife's mahr, this has not been reported from the scholars.

Our advice to the questioner is not to exaggerate in the mahr, for the less it is, the more blessed and good it will be.
