Is it permissible to pray for someone who died drunk, either because he did not pray, or because he died five days later due to drinking alcohol?

The wine drinker who dies while persistent in his sin or in a state of drunkenness is to be washed, shrouded, and prayed over; because he died as a sinner, not as a disbeliever. This is what the scholars have agreed upon. As for the one who abandons prayer, praying over him is based on the differing opinions regarding his status. Whoever deems him a disbeliever does not pray over him, and whoever considers him a sinful Muslim prays over him. The opinion of praying over him is more preferable, as it is the view of the majority.
