What is the interpretation of verse 267 of Surat Al-Baqarah, especially the meaning of: "unless you close your eyes to it"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Allah Almighty commands His servants to spend from the good things they have earned and forbids them from giving away bad things in charity. Thus, a Muslim should only give from the average of his wealth. This verse was revealed concerning some of the Ansar who used to give away bad dates in charity. Just as no one would be pleased to take something bad for themselves, it is not befitting to offer it to Allah.
