What is the ruling on giving out a female lamb that has not exceeded six months of age as zakat for livestock that give birth more than once a year, when the rest of its offspring are sold at the same age?

Zakat becomes obligatory on sheep under three conditions: reaching the nisab (40 sheep), the passing of a hawl (a full lunar year) – except for offspring which are zakatable according to their origin – and that they are free-grazing for the entire hawl or most of it.

The amounts of Zakat are: for every 40 sheep: a jadha'ah or thaniyyah of goats. For 121: two sheep. For 201: three. For 400: four. Thereafter, for every 100 sheep: one sheep.

A jadha'ah from sheep (Dhan) is one that is one year old or six months old. A thaniyyah from goats (Ma'az) is one that is two years old or one year old. If the age of the animal given as Zakat is less than six months, it is not sufficient, and Zakat must be re-issued for the past years. If it reaches six months, it is considered sufficient by some scholars.
