Zakat is not obligatory on sheep that are fed for most of the year. It becomes obligatory if they are not fed, provided that full ownership and the minimum threshold (nisab) are met.

The nisab for sheep is fifty sheep, in which case one ewe is due. Two ewes are due for one hundred and twenty-one sheep.

Lambs born during the year are counted towards the nisab when the mothers' year is complete.

According to some scholars, it is permissible to give a six-month-old lamb, but it is more cautious to give a ewe that is no less than one year old.
