Who is the miserly person?
There is disagreement regarding the definition of stinginess (bukhl). Some say it is: withholding something whose withholding brings no benefit and whose giving brings no harm. Others say it is: withholding what is obligatory. And it is said: seeking the meager and withholding the trifle. And it is said: for a man to consider what he spends as ruin and what he keeps as honor. And it is said: withholding wealth where it ought to be spent, according to religious law or chivalry, and not being overly meticulous or exhaustive in trifles. Perhaps the last definition is the most comprehensive. Stinginess is condemned in the Noble Qur'an: "And let not those who withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty think that it is good for them. Rather, it is bad for them. They will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection." And it was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "And what disease is more harmful than stinginess?"
