Is a wife entitled to stipulate delaying childbirth until after graduation, knowing that the husband desires to have children immediately after marriage?
It is permissible to delay pregnancy for a period of time for a benefit perceived by the spouses, such as completing studies. This is in accordance with what is stated in the authentic hadiths regarding the permissibility of 'azl (coitus interruptus) and what has been narrated from the Companions. If the spouses agree on this, then this condition must be fulfilled, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The conditions most worthy of fulfillment are those by which you make intimacy lawful." Nevertheless, it is advisable to try and convince the wife that children are a fundamental objective of marriage and take precedence over rushing to finish studies, while pledging to help her complete her education.
