What is the meaning of the Hadith: "No human ever filled a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are sufficient for the son of Adam to keep his back straight. But if he must eat, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath"?

Al-Mubarakpuri explained the hadith: "No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach," by stating that the stomach is the worst of vessels because its fullness leads to corruption in religious and worldly matters. A few morsels are sufficient for the son of Adam to sustain himself and strengthen his back for obedience. If he is compelled to eat more, he should allocate one-third for food, one-third for drink, and one-third for breathing. This is the utmost one should choose for eating, and eating beyond satiety is forbidden. Al-Tibi said: One should not exceed what sustains the body for obedience, and if one wishes to exceed that, one should not go beyond the mentioned division.
