How can one atone for ongoing sins, such as guiding someone to an evil act or giving them the name of a song?
Repentance that is sincere erases the sin, even if its effects remain, and does not burden the repentant with the consequences of his sin; because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin.” The conditions of repentance are: ceasing the sin, resolving not to return to it, and regretting having done it. And if it is possible to advise the one who was guided to the forbidden and to clarify the ruling for him, then let him do so, otherwise his repentance is sufficient. And what is most apparent is that the repentance of the one who calls to sin is valid even if the action continues, because repentance obliterates what came before it, and returning what is owed is restricted to what is possible, and ceasing everything is according to its own nature. And one should increase good deeds and strive to change the call to evil into a call to good.
