What is the ruling on participating in forums where ordinary banter occurs between young men and young women?

It is not permissible to participate in forums that lead to speaking submissively, or to private seclusion (khalwa), or to seeing what is unlawful, or that incite temptation (fitna), such as joking between young men and women. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The eyes commit zina by looking, and the ears commit zina by listening, and the heart desires and wishes, and the private parts either confirm or deny that." The consideration is for the realities, not the names.
