Is it permissible to disobey parents in matters that do not entail sin, such as spending money on the Internet, given that there is benefit and no harm to them, and with consideration not to annoy them?
Obedience to parents is obligatory in matters that do not involve disobedience (to Allah) and that benefit them, provided there is no harm to the child. It is not permissible to take parents' money except with their permission. An exception to this is the son taking his maintenance in a reasonable manner if the father refuses to provide it, and also taking what is needed to assist in seeking obligatory knowledge. If parents prevent their son from seeking Islamic knowledge, then obedience to them is not obligatory; rather, the son should prioritize seeking knowledge. He is permitted to access the internet to learn the obligatory rulings of without his parents' permission and to spend in a reasonable manner. He can also download websites to benefit from them without an internet connection.
