What is the ruling on a disobedient wife who adorns herself with makeup and dances at weddings, and refuses to obey her husband and father?
The woman who leaves her home immodestly (mutabarrijah) without her husband's permission, and commits the aforementioned acts, has combined disobedience to her Lord, defiance of her husband, and disrespect towards her father, thereby greatly increasing her sin.
It is obligatory to advise her, remind her of Allah, and gently call her to repentance, for "religion is advice." If she rectifies her behavior, then praise be to Allah. If she does not respond, then divorcing such a woman is recommended if she neglects her obligatory duties to Allah or if she is not chaste. However, if divorcing her conflicts with a prevailing benefit, then there is no harm for her husband to keep her and be patient with her, exerting his effort to reform her by teaching her matters of her religion, connecting her with gatherings of good, and the companionship of righteous women. A man should also initially choose his wife well, marrying a religious and good woman.
