What is the ruling on a husband preventing his wife from contacting her family?

It is not permissible for a husband to prevent his wife from contacting her parents, and she is not obliged to obey him in this matter. She may contact them without his permission because this does not involve the squandering of his rights, in which obedience to him is due. Connecting is the lowest degree of maintaining kinship ties. Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory, and obeying the husband in matters that are not sinful is also obligatory. Therefore, both rights must be fulfilled through wisdom, patience, and avoidance of anything that leads to animosity and separation.
