A divorced woman who menstruates must observe an 'iddah (definition) (waiting period) of three complete menstrual cycles, even if menstruation occurs once every two months. If menstruation ceases and the divorced woman does not know the reason, she observes an 'iddah of one year after its cessation: nine months for pregnancy and three months for the 'iddah itself. If a husband divorces his wife twice and the 'iddah expires, a minor separation (baynunah sughra) occurs, and she is not permissible for him except with a new marriage contract. However, documenting the divorce is not a condition for its occurrence.
