What good deed might a servant have performed for Allah to guide him from straying to drawing near to Him and loving the religion, even though he had no intention of repenting, but was immersed in desires?

Guidance is a favor from Allah, bestowed by His justice and grace upon whom He wills. A person's guidance is not self-generated but purely by the grace of Allah. Among the reasons for the persistence of guidance are a servant's self-abasement, their recognition of their own faults and shortcomings, and their magnification of Allah's blessings upon them. For Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise; He guides those who are worthy of it. And part of a servant's worthiness is their recognition of the value of the blessing and their gratitude to the Bestower of it. Whoever does not show gratitude for a blessing will have it taken away from them.
