Is prayer in shorts (short trousers) valid?

A man's 'awrah (private parts) in prayer is what is between his navel and his knee. If trousers cover it, the prayer is valid. It is stipulated that the trousers must not be transparent. If they are, then wearing them is forbidden, based on the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "Cover your thigh, for a man's thigh is part of his 'awrah." If the size of the 'awrah is discernible, then it is disliked according to the majority of scholars.
