What is the ruling on a man's prayer if his trousers are torn or short, not fully covering the knee, given that a man's awrah is from the navel to the knee?

The awrah (private parts) of a man, according to the majority of jurists, is what is between the navel and the knee. The knee itself, according to the more preponderant opinion, is not part of the awrah. Therefore, if a man prays with his knees or part of them uncovered, his prayer is not invalidated, though it is disliked for him to do so.

If the hole in the trousers is small and he prayed with it unintentionally, his prayer is not invalidated, based on the allowance for a small part of the awrah being uncovered due to forgetfulness. However, if it was intentional or not small, then he must repeat the prayer. This applies if the hole is in a part of the awrah.

But if the hole is in the knees or below them, it does not affect the validity of the prayer, even if it is large. Wearing tight trousers is disliked unless something is worn over them.

It is better and more preferable for a Muslim to perform prayer in his best appearance and finest clothes, as Allah Almighty says: ﴿O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prayer﴾ (Al-A'raf: 31).
