What is the difference between an Usuli and a Faqih?

An usooli (jurist-consult) is someone attributed to the science of usool al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and is a scholar proficient in it. The science of usool al-fiqh refers to the collection of rules and studies by which one arrives at deducing practical Shari'ah rulings from their detailed evidences, or the rules that a faqih (jurist) uses in deriving rulings from their evidences. As for the faqih, he is attributed to the science of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and is a scholar proficient in it.
