Did the Messenger, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, die illiterate, or did he learn to read and write before his death?

It is well-known that Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah did not marry and did not have a son named Abdullah. The circulating books are either authored by him or are collections of his fatwas that have been compiled and printed.
