Is it obligatory to correct the Imam if he makes a mistake in pausing and resuming during the recitation of a Surah after Al-Fatihah, in a way that changes the meaning, such as his saying: "He said, 'Indeed, it is a cow neither trained to till the earth' - then he paused - 'nor irrigate the crops'"?

Observing the rules of waqf (pausing) in recitation is important due to its connection with the meaning. If the Imam makes an ugly (improper) waqf, it is good for the congregant to alert him. However, it is preferable to delay the alert until after the prayer to avoid disturbance, especially if the Imam is ignorant of the rules of waqf. Making a mistake in waqf does not render one sinful unless the intention is to distort the meaning. Likewise, one should not rush to correct the Imam unless the error is certain, as the Imam might be interpreting or relying on an exegetical view that permits that waqf.
