Is it permissible to dissemble for the sake of reform, and what are its limits?
The hypocrisy intended might be the forbidden lie, except in three cases: war to terrorize the enemy, reconciliation between disputants, and between spouses for the continuation of companionship. The proof for this is the of Umm Kulthum bint 'Uqbah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not a liar who reconciles between people and says good and promotes good," and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not permit anything of what people say as lies except in three cases: in war, in reconciling between people, and a man's conversation with his wife, and a woman's conversation with her husband. Lying for reconciliation is permissible to the extent of need, and it is better to use equivocation (Tawriyah) instead of explicit lying.
