“Mutoon” is the plural of “matn,” which is the back of something or its prominent surface. “Matn” is what is firm of the back, and from it comes the phrase “matn al-mizadah” (the back of the waterskin), meaning its prominent surface. Among the people of Hadith, “mutoon” are contrasted with “asanid” (chains of transmission), so it is said: “the matn of the hadith and its sanad.” In this sense, “mutoon” refers to the texts.
