Is it permissible for a man to wear a watch made of metal coated only on the outside with gold plating, whose color changes with use?
It is permissible for a man to wear a ring and anything similar to it made of all metals except gold, as men have been forbidden from wearing gold rings. As for gold-plated items, the majority of scholars hold the view that it is absolutely forbidden to use them, regardless of whether the gold is little or much. This is due to the desire to avoid breaking the hearts of the poor, and because it is considered a use of forbidden gold. The Shafi'is are of the opinion that if the gold can be separated from the metal, it is forbidden due to the abundance of gold, but if it cannot be separated, it is permissible due to the small amount of gold. The preponderant view is the absolute prohibition.
