What is the ruling on abandoning the fulfillment of a vow to fast every Monday and Thursday for life and to recite one hundred verses from the Quran every night after the condition of the vow has been met, and what is its expiation?

Fatwa number 63377 clarifies the disliked nature of vows contingent upon something happening, while emphasizing the obligation to fulfill them if they involve an act of obedience, based on Allah's saying: ﴿And let them fulfill their vows﴾, and the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: «Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him.»

Therefore, the vow must be fulfilled in the manner the person vowed, as long as they are able to do so. They must also make up for the days they did not fast.

It is not permissible to offer expiation for a vow instead of fulfilling it, unless one is completely unable to do so and there is no hope of this inability ceasing. In such a case, one should offer expiation like that for an oath, based on the Messenger of Allah's (PBUH) saying: «The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath.» This applies when one is unable to fulfill it.
