Is it established that the Mi'raj was a physical thing, like a ladder or steps, which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ascended?
The Mi'raj is the instrument of ascent, and its exact nature is unknown because no authentic describes it.
However, a description of it was mentioned in the Marfu' Hadith of Abu Sa'id: "Then Jibril (peace be upon him) and I entered the Holy House (Bayt al-Maqdis), and each of us prayed two rak'ahs. Then I was brought the Mi'raj, upon which the souls of the Children of Adam ascend. The creation had never seen anything more beautiful than the Mi'raj. When you see a deceased person's gaze fixed upwards, it is because their gaze is fixed upwards in wonder at the Mi'raj." He said: "So Jibril and I ascended." This Hadith is very weak; Al-Dhahabi, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Albani described it as weak or fabricated.
None of these descriptions are authentic. Therefore, one must believe in the Mi'raj without delving into its specific nature, as it is among the matters of the Unseen.
